DIGITAL CAMERAS, BACKS & PERIPHERALS
Canon Enhances EOS 1D
Canon’s new 8.2-megapixel EOS-1D Mark II N digital SLR preserves the speed, responsiveness, image quality and reliability of the EOS-1D Mark II while incorporating new features
that make the camera easier and more precise to use.
While the 1D Mark II fired at 8.5 frames per second with a 40-JPEG burst, the new model is capable of 48 full-resolution JPEG images in a burst. The camera also can shoot 19 frames of RAW+JPEG (JPEG quality: 8, Picture Style: Standard, ISO 100); and at 59 frames or better at the JPEG Middle 1 setting, 77 frames
or better at JPEG Middle 2, and 135 or better at JPEG small.
Along with its improved burst rate,
the 1D Mark II N has a new 2.5-inch, wide-angle view LCD/TFT monitor with 230,000 pixels of resolution.
Improvements also have been made in image playback. Magnified views are possible from any selected AF point and during Quick Review. When an image is displayed on the LCD monitor, users immediately can magnify the view to check focus. Other improved playback functions include a “last displayed image remembered” feature and a more complete INFO display, which shows file size and includes notations for monochrome and color.
The EOS-1D Mark II N camera shares with the EOS-1 series family an all-metal body and chassis, as
well as weather-resistant construction with a shutter durability-tested to 200,000 exposures. The new camera is priced at $3,999.
New Canon EOS 5D SLR Offers Technology, Affordability
The new compact Canon EOS 5D digital SLR incorporates a full-frame CMOS
sensor with 12.8 megapixels of resolution in a magnesium-alloy body weighing 28.6 ounces. A finer CMOS production process and optimized photodiode construction increase the light-sensitive area of each pixel and improve dynamic range.
The model allows users to shoot up to three frames per second, and record up to 60 full-resolution JPEGs and 17 RAW images in a single burst. The camera includes a new nine-point autofocus system with six supplemental autofocus points, a new algorithm and new circuitry. The nine autofocus points are concentrated at the center, with the extreme left and right points located in the same positions as the corresponding autofocus points on the EOS-1Ds Mark II. The six invisible supplemental autofocus points are grouped around the center for accurate focusing and tracking subjects in
AI SERVO AF mode.
The EOS 5D has a newly developed, high-speed, durable shutter unit. The shutter is a vertical-travel, focal-plane type with two parallelogram link curtains, each having four blades, three made from KN Mylar and one from Duralumin, for durability rated at 100,000 shots.
The new camera has a 2.5-inch polysilicon TFT LCD monitor with
approximately 230,000 pixels. Brightness is adjustable in five levels. In addition, Quick Review images are now enlargeable.
The EOS 5D sells for approximately $3,299.
Samsung Launches 8MP Digimax Pro815
Samsung has released its 8-megapixel Digimax Pro815, featuring a larger LCD and 15x longer optical zoom.
With a 2/3-inch CCD sensor and f/2.2-4.6 Schneider 7.2-108mm lens (equivalent to a 28-420mm lens in 35mm format), crisp images are possible in both wide angle and telephoto. The Pro815’s 4x digital zoom allows for a combined zoom of 60x.
The Pro815 also features a high-speed mode, for steady shooting even in tele-zoom. When high-speed mode is selected, the camera automatically increases the sensitivity
up to maximum ISO 800, depending on the surrounding exposure and focal length.
The 3.5-inch LCD incorporates transmissive with micro-reflective technology for vibrant image quality indoors and outdoors. An additional 1.44-inch-wide color LCD is located on the top of the camera for low-angle shots.
The Pro815 is priced at $849.
Canon EOS 20DA Digital SLR Aids Astrophotography
Canon USA has released its EOS 20Da digital SLR, designed to address the specific requirements of
astrophotography. Its features include a preview LCD and a low-pass filter positioned in front of an 8.2-megapixel CMOS sensor that has been modified to yield sharper and higher-contrast images of various astronomical phenomena, such as diffuse reddish nebulae. The modi-fication increases the transmission
of light at the specific wavelength
of 656 nanometers, known as the
Hydrogen Alpha line, or H wavelength, by a factor of 2.5x.
Live previews have been made possible by locking up the mirror and opening the shutter to display
a magnified view of the subject on the 1.8-inch LCD monitor. To help ensure a sharp focus, the central
portion of the image can be magnified on the LCD by 5x or 10x. The live-view mode also can be seen on most television monitors while connected to the EOS 20Da camera’s video out terminal.
The EOS 20Da incorporates enhanced noise reduction for long exposures and an array of ISO settings from 50 to 3200. Other fea-tures include a nine-point autofocus system, full manual controls, up to five frames per second burst mode, and a choice between RAW, JPEG, and RAW+JPEG image recording capabilities.
The EOS 20Da has an estimated selling price of $2,199.

Pentax Releases Digital SLR
Pentax Imaging has launched a third digital SLR camera, the *ist DL. Continuing with the line’s compact style, the new model’s body weighs 16.6 ounces and has a 2.5-inch LCD monitor.
The *ist DL incorporates a 23.5 by 15.7mm CCD image sensor for 6.1 effective megapixels. A 16-segment metering system assures precision light measurement, even under complicated conditions. It also offers center-weighted metering and spot metering for specialized applications.
The SAFOX VIII AF system uses three cross-type wide-area autofocus sensors, automatically selecting the most appropriate one for a given subject. It also lets the user fix the sensor point on the middle sensor for specific applications and select the preferred focus mode between single autofocus, which locks the
focus when the shutter release button is half-depressed, and continuous
autofocus, which adjusts the focus to the subject’s movement.
The shutter unit has a top speed of 1/4,000 second and a top synchronization speed of 1/180 second. Up to five images can be recorded consecutively at a speed of approximately 2.8 frames per second.
The camera and smc Pentax DA 18-55mm digital lens is expected to sell for less than $800.
Canon Launches New S80
Canon’s new flagship PowerShot S80 digital camera features 8 megapixels of resolution, a 28mm-wide lens, a 2.5-inch LCD screen and an XGA movie mode.
The PowerShot S80 retains many features of its predecessor, the S70, including a wide-angle, ultra-high-refractive-index glass aspherical lens with a 3.6x wide-angle optical zoom (28-100mm equivalent). The autofocus system has been improved to
reduce the time required for focusing by up to approximately 20 percent. In addition, exposure control has been refined for low-light conditions for better exposure accuracy and focusing.
The camera supports movie recording in XGA size (1,024 x 768 pixels) at 15 frames per second. Continuous recording of XGA up to a file size of 1 GB is possible. The S80 provides a
choice between single-frame and sequence-frame for movie prints. When
single is selected, any frame from a movie can be selected and printed on a single sheet. In sequence mode,
