FILM-BASED CAMERAS

TAMRON ANNOUNCES BRONICA RF645 6x4.5 FORMAT COUPLED RANGEFINDER CAMERA WITH INTERCHANGEABLE LENSES
Tamron’s new RF645, a medium-format 6x4.5 coupled rangefinder camera, has been introduced under the Bronica brand name along with interchangeable lenses.

The total line of new products includes the camera, a Zenzanon 45mm f/4 with dedicated external viewfinder, a Zenzanon 65mm f/4, a Zenzanon 135mm f/4.5 and a Dedicated Speedlight RF20.

The Bronica RF645 was designed for amateur photographers seeking to move beyond 35mm to medium format, as well as existing medium-format users and working professionals looking for superior tools for the 6x4.5 format.

Designed to be lightweight and compact, the RF645 is the first rangefinder camera in the 6x4.5 format to offer interchangeable lenses; the rangefinder is constructed with real-image optics fully capable of working efficiently with the standard 65mm lens (40mm equivalent for 35mm) and the telephoto 135mm (80mm equivalent).

The RF645 also offers a maximum shutter speed of 1/750 second (in Program AE with an aperture of f/22), a light-shielding curtain to prevent accidental film exposure, an automatic shutter-cocking system that charges the shutter automatically after shutter release and an easy-to-use SE Program system with center-weighted average metering.

The Bronica RF645 with the RF65mm standard lens has a list price of $2,132, and an average street price of $1,799.

OLYMPUS ADDS NEW STYLUS TO LINE WITH 35-170MM ZOOM RANGE
Olympus has introduced two new additions to its already extensive Stylus line of 35mm cameras, the Stylus Epic Zoom 170 Deluxe and the 170 QD (with a Quartz Date feature). Sporting a 35-170mm zoom lens, they have the longest range in the line. Both are highly contoured and technologically savvy, with ultra-compact size measuring 4.8 x 2.6 x 2 inches and a shapely and sleek body design.

The new Advanced Combination Auto Focus System automatically alternates between the Active Mode for close-up subjects and the Passive Mode for distant subjects for sharp, clear photos. Other features include red-eye reduction; all-weather construction; a high-quality ED glass lens; an auto color-balancing flash; fully automatic operation (autofocus, autoexposure, auto film loading and rewind); and a 12-second electronic self-timer. The Deluxe version has Olympus’ visual confirmation finder, which alerts the photographer that the shutter has been released by momentarily darkening the lens. Suggested retail prices are $491 for the Stylus Epic Zoom 170 Deluxe and $560 for the Stylus Epic Zoom 170 QD

LEICA LAUNCHES REPLICA OF ORIGINAL 1924 CAMERA
Leica Camera is making it possible for photo buffs to own a replica version of the original Leica camera—the O series—first produced in 1924 in a limited edition of 31 units for field testing of the 35mm format. The new replica is true to the original design of inventors Ernst Leitz II and Oskar Barnack.

Few of the original cameras in the Leica O series still exist, and those that do are traded at collector’s prices of more than $100,000. In contrast, the replica—priced at $2,795—is as close as possible to the original, including dimensions, form, surface, engraving and materials. Just as in the original prototype, the shutter blinds do not overlap when the shutter is wound and, as in the original, the exposure times are determined by affixing a shutter cap with varying slit widths for exposure times of 1/20, 1/50, 1/100, 1/200 and 1/500 second. Users will also still have to remove the camera base plate to reload film, although the model has been modified to accommodate modern 35mm film.

The camera comes in an aluminum housing and ships with a custom leather Eveready case and carrying strap reminiscent of the 1920s. Production is being limited to 4,000 units.

LENSES

TAMRON’S NEW AF70-300MM LENS FEATURES 1:2 MACRO
Tamron has introduced a high-quality, compact ultra tele-zoom lens that covers 70mm to 300mm telephoto with macro capability of 1:2.

The ultra tele-zoom lens, which inherited its optical configuration from Tamron’s previous 70-300mm lens, employs an entirely new mechanical design and construction aimed at reducing weight and achieving its 1:2 macro feature.

The AF70-300mm offers a macro switchover mechanism at any focal-length range between 180mm and 300mm, allowing the user to get down to 0.95m; offers a 1:2 maximum magnification; and comes with a large bayonet lens hood for optimal shading. The AF70-300mm has a list price of $325, and an average street price of $199.

MAMIYA OFFERS THREE NEW LENSES
Mamiya has three new lenses in its product line: an autofocus 55-110mm f/4.5 zoom lens, an autofocus 105-210mm f/4.5 zoom lens and a 120mm f/4 macro/portrait lens.

With a variable angle of view from 35 to 65 degrees, the 1.9-pound AF 55-110mm f/4.5 zoom lens is ideally designed for a wide range of subjects, from portraits to landscapes. The independent focus and zoom ring (straight helicoids) allow for best use of polarizing filters because the front elements do not rotate during zoom or focus actions.

Weighing 2.8 pounds, the AF 105-210mm f/4.5 zoom lens was also designed for the Mamiya 645 Autofocus camera, offers a variable angle of view from 36 to 19 degrees and is equivalent to a 65-130mm zoom focal length in 35mm format. The lens offers an easy-grip, two-position manual/autofocus "clutch" on the lens barrel for fine manual focus adjustment.

The new MF (manual focus) 120mm f/4 macro/portrait telephoto lens offers a view angle of 33 degrees and is equivalent to a 73mm focal length in 35mm format. Pinpoint sharpness with manual focus is assured from infinity to a 1:1 magnification without additional adapters by a green diode in the finder, which provides focus confirmation. The lens weighs 1.8 pounds. All three of the new lenses use Mamiya’s "eco-glass," which contains no lead or arsenic. The Mamiya 55-110mm zoom and the 105-210 zoom each have suggested retail prices of $1,999, while the 120mm lens retails for $1,799.

APS CAMERAS

LEICA STEPS INTO APS FORMAT WITH NEW CII CAMERA
Responding to consumer demand, Leica has announced the C11 camera, the first Leica camera for the popular Advanced Photo System format.

The smallest camera in Leica’s product line, the 4.1 x 2.4 x 1.6-inch, 7.5-ounce camera is small enough to be carried in a shirt pocket but packs a powerful array of features into its small size.

The tiny camera has a powerful aspheric 3x zoom lens, and the 23-70mm zoom (equivalent to 30-90mm in 35mm format) can shoot wide or close up with brilliant results. The C11 offers drop-in film loading, midroll film change capability and three picture sizes. Users can choose from traditional 4x6, 4x7 for framing or 4x11 panoramic; the camera automatically adjusts the viewfinder when the picture size is selected. The C11 has a suggested retail of $279.

OLYMPUS’ NEWEST i ZOOM CAMERA ADDS VISUAL CONFIRMATION
The newest addition to Olympus’ popular i Zoom series is the i Zoom 75 Deluxe, an Advanced Photo System (APS) format camera with a proprietary feature built in—the visual confirmation finder, or VF.

The VF feature allows users to stop fretting about whether a shot has been captured because it momentarily darkens the viewfinder during shutter release. The i Zoom 75 Deluxe also offers drop-in film loading, features midroll change convenience and weighs a mere 6 ounces. The i Zoom 75 Deluxe ($454) also offers a quick-charging flash, a 12-second electronic self-timer, a 28-75mm zoom lens, three print formats and fully automatic operation.

PENTAX RELEASES EFINA J APS COMPACT ZOOM CAMERA
Adding to its popular line of Advanced Photo System cameras, Pentax has introduced the efina J. Within its compact body, the efina J houses a high-performance, 24-48mm 2x zoom lens (approximately 30-60mm in 35mm format) as well as a host of user-friendly features, including an actual-image zoom viewfinder, an active-infrared autofocus system, a programmed autoexposure system and built-in autoflash.

The efina J ($134) also offers a choice of three print formats (classic, high-definition TV and panorama), five-mode data imprinting, subtitle selection/imprinting with 31 prerecorded subtitles, and the designation of the number of prints to be made.

DIGITAL CAMERAS, BACKS AND PERIPHERALS

SONY’S SUPER-COMPACT DIGITAL PACKS PREMIUM PERFORMANCE
Sony has announced a sophisticated yet easy-to-use pocket-sized digital camera with high resolution and a powerful zoom that combines the latest in digital imaging technology with intuitive operation and pocket-sized design, raising the bar for the emerging ultra-small digital camera category.

Sony’s new Cyber-shot DSC-P1 captures high-resolution images up to 3.3 megapixels, the highest resolution found in a small camera, and has a powerful 3x optical/6x digital zoom to catch faraway events, both of which have been unachievable in this category of digital cameras until now. At about $800, the tiny DSC-P1 measures just over 4 x 2 x 1 inches and weighs just over 9 ounces with battery and Memory Stick media. It sports a distinctive contoured design for easy handling as well as easy-access controls. The images are captured on Sony’s Memory Stick, a sturdy, removable flash memory card that can be connected to dozens of other electronics products.

Other features include ClipMotion, which allows users to take up to 10 pictures that the camera automatically combines to make a single ClipMotion animation file that is smaller in memory size than a standard MPEG movie; a 1.5-inch LCD viewer; file saving in JPEG; uncompressed TIFF for higher-quality images; GIF for text mode; three different MPEG options for motion, video, and sound, including MPEG HQ for full-frame, 15-frames-per-second video; and an InfoLithium battery with one battery charge lasting up to 60 minutes in shooting mode and up to 90 minutes in playback mode.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-P1 users may also purchase separately a Marine Pack (MPK-P1) accessory, which is an underwater housing that makes the camera waterproof down to nearly 100 feet (30 meters) and protects the unit from normal use in rain and around swimming pools. The Marine Pack’s suggested retail price is around $250.

CANON EXPANDS DIGITAL LINE WITH POWERSHOT G1
Canon USA continues to expand its line of digital cameras with the  introduction of the new PowerShot G1, the company’s most fully featured 3.3-megapixel camera to date.

The new G1 tops Canon’s current lineup of PowerShot-series cameras and stands out in the highly competitive 3-megapixel, 3x zoom digital camera category by offering features like a variable-angle LCD monitor that rotates up to 270 degrees, full compatibility with Type I and II CompactFlash memory cards and fully automated operation.

Other camera features include a high-resolution 34-102mm f/2.0-2.5 3x zoom lens, 12 EOS System-based picture-taking modes, a wide exposure-sensitivity range, an optical viewfinder with dioptric correction, a wireless remote controller and a wide selection of image quality settings. Suggested retail price is $999.

FOVEON PARTNERS WITH HASSELBLAD ON HIGH-PERFORMANCE DIGITAL
Foveon Inc., the Silicon Valley-based producer of professional image sensors, image capture systems and photographic cameras, has announced the release of Foveon II, a new version of their professional digital camera that offers faster performance and greater configuration versatility. The camera was created in partnership with Swedish manufacturer Viktor Hasselblad AB.

The camera is approximately the size of a medium-format film camera and uses a host computer for operation. The host computer provides a graphical interface for the camera operation that includes a live viewfinder and high-resolution image review. Communication between the camera and the computer is via a FireWire (IEEE 1394) connection, and the product can be configured as a stand-alone camera for connection to a user’s existing computer or with an optional frame to allow a photographer to integrate a notebook computer as a line-of-sight viewfinder.

Integral to the Foveon II is the company’s image capture system, a single-shot, full-measured color capture technology. It uses three 2048x2048 Foveon-developed image sensors and delivers images with quality comparable to medium-format film. It will be available at a suggested retail price of $23,900.

IMACON INTRODUCES FIRST MICRO-SCAN DIGITAL CAMERA BACK
The first digital camera back that offers three different modes — single-shot, multi-shot and micro-scan — the new Imacon 3020 is able to capture both still objects (multi-shot) and live objects (single-shot). The 3020 not only delivers single shots with 18MB interpolated files, it also offers multi-shot and micro-scan modes, which deliver non-interpolated files from 18MB to 72MB in 24-bit RGM mode. It utilizes 16-bit capture of each primary color to deliver excellent color.

The new camera back is designed for photographers whose primary work involves portrait studios, catalogs and magazines. Its suggested retail price is $19,995.

TWO NEW "SUPERMODELS" RELEASED BY BETTER LIGHT
Better Light, a designer and manufacturer of professional digital scanning camera inserts, has introduced two new "supermodels" that provide extended resolution options for digital imaging applications.

With enhanced resolution, the new Super 6K and Super 8K offer photographers the capability to increase the resolution several increments up to 150 percent of the previous pixel dimensions and file sizes up to 2.25 times larger than the company’s current models.

The Super 6K will record up to 309MB RGB 24-bit files, and the Super 8K will provide up to 8000 x 10660-pixel files (244MB) at 100 percent resolution and increase up to a maximum of 12000x15990-pixel resolution, or 549MB.

Each Better Light scanning camera package includes a 4x5 camera insert, cable, integrated control unit and Better Light camera control software. Minimum advertised price for the 6K is $16,990, and for the 8K is $24,990.

LIGHTPHASE FLEXADAPTER FOR 4x5 INTRODUCED BY PHASE ONE
Phase One’s new FlexAdapter is a sliding adapter that operates in three steps, allowing photographers to shoot one, two or three times depending on the assignment. The sliding adapter physically indicates when a position is reached, and the LightPhase is then ready for capture; once captured, the images are developed on the fly and opened automatically in Adobe Photoshop.

Unlike some other sliding adapters on the market, the LightPhase FlexAdapter does not limit the 4x5 camera in terms of movement or supported lenses; since the adapter focus plane is designed to match that of the view camera, the photographer can easily flex with the camera, tilting and moving as needed.

The FlexAdapter works with all LightPhase models, including Hasselblad, Contax 645 and Mamiya 645AF, and can be mounted on a wide range of 4x5 view cameras, including those by Sinar, Horseman, Toyo and Linhof. Suggested retail is $2,990.

SINARBACK GOES MACINTOSH MOBILE WITH SINAR UNPLUGGED
The dramatic evolution of digital photography has led to increased use of digital cameras well outside of the confines of a studio. With the new Sinar Unplugged, mobility doesn’t mean loss of quality.

To enable photographers to transfer image data to a portable Macintosh PowerBook, Sinar now offers the Sinar Unplugged, which serves as an interface between the camera and the computer. Powered by a battery or by cable, the Unplugged is a small device that accepts the Sinar fiber optics PCI card and converts its signal directly to the latest generation of Macintosh PowerBooks.

The Sinarback features a cooled 6-million-pixel sensor that produces noise-free data with a 42-bit color depth RGB, in either the one-shot mode for moving subjects or the four-shot mode for perfect colors without color interpolation for stationary subjects. The Sinar Unplugged M Top has a suggested retail price of $4,795, and the L Top model retails for $5,995.

LEXAR INTRODUCES FOUR DIGITAL MARKET PRODUCTS
Lexar Media, a leading designer, developer and marketer of high-performance digital film and connectivity products for the digital photography market, has announced the introduction of four new products to its extensive line.

The FireWire CompactFlash Digital Film Reader, one of the fastest readers available to digital photographers, is capable of transferring images as much as four times faster than that of a traditional USB film reader device, and it easily transfers photos from a digital camera to a computer. Users simply remove the digital film from the camera and insert it directly into the FireWire CompactFlash Digital Film Reader; the reader then allows the user to "drag and drop," store, display or enhance the images.

Lexar’s Shoot & Share Image Viewer enables users to edit, crop and color-correct their digital images with a series of simple mouse clicks. Shoot & Share, which retails for $29.95, also allows photo sharing and photo-finishing in Lexar’s PrintRoom.com, an online site that allows users to upload and order high-quality prints from their digital images.

Also online is SayCheese.com, an online community and educational site for photographers of all levels—beginner, enthusiast and professional—who want to learn more about digital photography, products and technologies. The site was designed by Lexar to be an in-depth, one-stop information resource and is free to users.

The latest additions to Lexar’s line of Pro Series digital film cards are the 10X and 12X, 256MB and 320MB cards that are USB-enabled and designed to meet the needs of the professional photographer. Lexar’s fastest and highest-capacity cards, they offer enhanced image capabilities for the latest high-resolution megapixel digital cameras, including the Nikon D1, Fuji S1 and other high-end models. The film cards are priced from $849 to $1,299, and all of the models feature USB functionality built directly into the card, enabling quick and easy image transfer to a computer via a USB port.

CAMCORDERS

SONY COMBINES MPEG MOVIE, MEGAPIXEL DIGITAL STILL CAPABILITY IN COMPACT HANDYCAM PC110
Sony has introduced the DCR-PC110 Digital Handycam camcorder, the first camcorder to integrate both megapixel imaging and MPEG movie mode. With a multitude of preferred features packed into its diminutive size, the DCR-PC110 is a powerful new mini DV camcorder.

MPEG movie mode allows the capture of up to 60 seconds of video and audio in the video e-mail mode (160 x 112 resolution) or up to 15 seconds in the Presentation mode (320 x 240 resolution). These are the ideal resolutions for attaching video to e-mails and inserting into web pages and presentation materials.

Sony’s new DCR-PC110 Digital Handycam camcorder offers three different ways to record MPEG video. First, a convenient MPEG conversion feature allows users to select up to 60 seconds of recorded videotape and convert it to an MPEG movie. Second, users can shoot an MPEG movie "on location" when the moment is just right. And third, through the PC110’s audio/video input, video can be imported from an external source—such as a VHS deck, Video Walkman, VCR or analog camcorder—and converted to MPEG. MPEG video and still images can then be saved to the supplied Memory Stick digital memory card for easy transfer to a PC or other Memory Stick-enabled devices.

A USB connection facilitates the transfer of digital still images and MPEG movies from the camcorder to the PC.

Other features include an intelligent pop-up flash with four modes for low-light situations; a high-quality Carl Zeiss OE Vario-Sonnar T* lens; a 2.5-inch, 200,000-pixel precision SwivelScreen LCD for excellent viewing clarity with improved resolution; Super SteadyShot picture stabilization; an InfoLithium battery; and an i.LINK digital video interface for connection between any two devices equipped with an IEEE 1394 DV interface. The DCR-PC110 is small and lightweight at just 2 3/8 x 5 x 4 7/8 inches and 20 ounces. Its vertical design fits comfortably in a hand, making it easy to hold and very portable. The suggested retail price is about $2,000.

PRINTERS

SONY INTRODUCES FAST, VERSATILE DEDICATED HOME PHOTO PRINTER
Sony is giving consumers the benefits of choice, speed and convenience with its new DPP-SV55 Digital Photo Printer. No PC is required for this new snapshot photo printer, which enables the user to make pictures at home using a variety of media from digital cameras.

Combining Sony’s established dye-sublimation technology with higher resolution, the DPP-SV55 printer creates continuous-tone photos with color richness that rivals traditional photo prints. Using layers of color dye, the printer creates up to 16.7 million colors. Super Coat 2, a unique Sony laminate, is applied in either matte or glossy finish during the printing process, protecting photos from color-shift and fading. Pictures produced with the DPP-SV55 have similar picture permanence to traditional film-based photo processing.

The DPP-SV55 printer takes just 90 seconds to produce a standard 4x6-inch print. The printer uses two sizes of media: a standard borderless 4x6-inch print and a 3.5x4-inch novelty print size. Both media types support one, two, four or nine mini-print frames on a single sheet of paper. Three optional sticker print packs are also available with adhesive backing; they make a 4x6-inch sticker, a 3.5x4-inch sticker or nine die-cut mini-stickers. Suggested retail is $350.

EPSON LAUNCHES AFFORDABLE MACINTOSH INKJET PRINTER
Epson America has introduced the Epson Stylus Color 777i, a four-color ink-jet printer offering 2880 dpi, priced at just $99.
