Description: These abandoned fishing vessels seem to still be riding the waves of their "youth." To me, this image recalls an era when man and machine interacted with the raw forces of nature by the most modest of means. With the advent of pen or "farm-raised" fish, a traditional way of life for many ethnic groups is rapidly declining. Perhaps their fate is not unlike that of the Great Plains buffalo hunters and the Rocky Mountain fur traders. These "Old Mariners" seem to lobby this question of us: "What shall come next?"

Photography has been a passion in my life for over thirty years. A little schooling here, a little schooling there, and the rest self-taught. Early influences were Steve Wilson, Harold Sund, Ernst Haas and Jay Meisel, to mention a few. Wildlife and landscape have always been at the heart of my photographic pursuit and birds have been a particular interest to me.

I find the natural world endlessly entertaining and inspiring. As a commercial fisherman in Alaska for eighteen years, I had many opportunities to film the working life of fishermen. Influenced by Asian philosophy and Zen, I seek to film the essence of my subject (rather than record every quill and feather in the traditional Western fashion, for example). I often incorporate my photography in my freelance graphic design work. Photo credits include Alaska Airlines, Thousand Trails Corporation, Schucks, Natural History magazine, Pure Water Corporation, Cordova District Fishermen United, Pacific Fishing magazine, and Trident Seafood.
