Photographer: Joan Loeken, Seattle, Washington
Image Title: Behold Earth's Beauty
Category Runner-Up: Creative/Computer Enhanced

Technical Details: Canon EOS 3, Fuji Velvia. Montage: first image f/22, 2 stops overexposed; second image f/4, 1 stop overexposed and out of focus
Location: The Arboretum, Seattle
Description: I love adding a sense of wonder to an image. Creating a montage does this by allowing for the imaginative to be added to the reality of what we see. I have also called this image, "Fairy tale." In psychological terms a montage makes space for both the conscious and the unconscious.

In this way we are able to comprehend more than our eyes see. Enjoy!

Joan developed her interest in photography in the early 1980's and since 1988 has combined it with worldwide travel (including Patagonia, South Africa, Namibia, Nepal, Morocco, Baffin Island, New Zealand, Nova Scotia, Italy, Portugal, Mexico, Canada and U.S.) to document the beauty of the world around us.

Joan has exhibited in numerous gallery shows, juried exhibits and permanent collections in the Greater Seattle area, and has won numerous awards, both locally and nationally. Her photography career is a second one for Joan; she is a clinical social worker in private practice. Both careers have developed her appreciation of humanity and our relationship to the natural world.
