Photographer: Carl Clark, Seattle
Image Title: Oil & Ice
Category Runner-Up: Environmental Issues

Technical Details: Nikon F4; 300mm lens; Fuji Velvia film
Location: Anacortes, Washington
Description: Returning to Seattle from Anacortes near sunset, I was stopped by the image of Mt. Baker looming behind the oil refinery. I was struck by the contrast not only of the raw, natural energy of the volcano versus the "refined" energy of the refinery, but also by the enduring nature of the snows against the temporal nature of extraction of irreplaceable minerals for short term benefit. It is also a potent image of the despoiling effects of crude human efforts to extract finite energy resources from the earth instead of using ingenuity to harness renewable sources of energy.

"Photography involves not only capturing light and form at a moment in time, but also selecting those moments which define the essence of a mountain, a stream or a coastal scene. My photographs are a collection of such moments, but they also provide a clue to a larger whole. While viewing a scene of a mountain stream or clear dawn can spur a memory that is both reassuring in its familiarity and aesthetically pleasing. The collection of images inspires a more distant memory of the wholeness of the earth and a sense of belonging to both the earth and the universe."
