Description: The Songhai people founded Djenne, Mali, called the "Jewel of the Niger," in the 8th century. Situated in the heart of the inner delta of the Niger River, within the vastness of the Sahara Desert, Djenne and Tombouctou were the towns of the greatest commercial, intellectual and Islamic importance, during the period of 12th through the 19th century. The beautiful mud mosque surrounds the flowing grace of the Imam descending the main staircase. In the religious equation that embraces dogma, architecture and man, it is man that is most transient. Therefore, the Imam must be in motion.

Brian Vikander is one of a diminishing breed of individuals who continue to seek out our globe's most unusual corners. For the past 28 years, he has been recording the face of our ever-changing world. His imagery artfully examines the natural beauty, cultural history and human fiber of more than 100 countries on six continents. The design of his photography is to create a faithful, visually realistic and arresting impression of each locale.

Called "one of the great visualists of our time" by Harpers Magazine, the chronicle of his photographic efforts are evident annually in virtually every domestic and international publication that deals with the world of exotic and unusual travel, including: National Geographic Publications, Fuji, Kodak, Canon, Sports Illustrated, Communication Arts, Country Life (England), Estado de Sao Paulo (Brazil), Geo (Germany), Match (France), Rutas del Mundo (Spain), and Der Stern (German). Additionally, his photographs are part of more than 100 museum, corporate and private collections around the world. 'Seek your journey's beginning and end...'

The purpose of the journey is to change the state of being in the soul, to awaken the sensitivity to the feelings of others, to reveal the unity underlying our own nature and to fructify and refresh through the integration of our capacity for insight, understanding and joy.
