Photographer: Dan Lamont, Seattle, Washington
Image Title: Kamingxwan Kids
Category: Indigenous Cultures

Technical Details: Canon EOS-1, 24mm lens, Fuji Neopan 400 film, exposure unrecorded
Location: Mindanao, Philippines
Description: High in the remote mountains on the southern Philippine island of Mindanao, a group of internal refugees, some of whose children are pictured here, were trying to build a new community in the remnants of a tropical rainforest illegally clear cut by Manila-based business concerns. The new village, called Kamingxwan ("wilderness" in English), would be the home to some 3,000 members of displaced ethnic minority groups who two generations ago were isolated hunters and gatherers but whose lives have been forever changed by the incessant civil war.
