Image Title: Novice Monks
Category: Indigenous Cultures

Technical Details: Leica M6, Noctilux 50mm lens, Kodak Ektachrome 100VS film, 1/15 second at f/1.0
Location: Kyaikhtiyo Pagoda, Myanmar
Description: This image was made at Kyaikhtiyo Pagoda, a major Buddhist pilgrimage site in Myanmar. The pagoda itself sits atop a huge gilded boulder perched on the edge of a sheer cliff. These novice monks arrived at dusk, their young faces bathed in warm light reflected from the boulder's gold leaf covering. I was delighted by the almost playful way they made their offerings. Clearly, their faith is an integral and joyful part of every day life.

This is my favorite time of day to photograph - right at the edge of light.
