Description: The photo was taken from the rooftop of the temple, still within reach of jets of water. Holi, the 'festival of color,' is a lively celebration when normally strict social mores are relaxed. Symbolically reenacting the playful god Krishna's habit of tossing buckets of water on passing milkmaids, Holi is an occasion when no individual out in public is safe from being pelted with colored powder and dyed water. It is celebrated throughout India for a period of three days, except in the region of Uttar Pradesh, where the god is believed to have lived. There, the festival lasts for a week and takes on exceptional exuberance. Notice the woman pulling on a man's hair. He pitched a bucket of water in her face and tried to run but was slowed by the crowd and she caught up with him to exact revenge! This scene was photographed for the 'Religion' section of Hebberd's "Cultural Portraits of India" book and photo exhibition.
