Description: Every morning Harijans, or 'children of God'
sweep and wash the ancient cobblestone streets of Jaisalmer,
a 12th century citadel city. From across the desert, the impressive
honey-colored sandstone fortress that dominates the horizon appears
as a mirage, like a timeless scene from A Thousand and One
Nights. Elaborate stone haveli mansions grace the
inside of the fort as well as humble dwellings with brightly
painted walls. This scene was photographed for the Daily Life'
section of Hebberd's "Cultural Portraits of India"
book and photo exhibition.
