Many Japanese experts have called it the best such garden outside of Japan. It is not only a special place for photography, but I often go there to meditate and spend quality time with my wife. Photographers must honor the experience of other visitors and the fragile nature of the garden by taking care to keep themselves and their equipment from blocking the travel of others and from damaging the environment. Fortunately, because of a light rain, there were not many visitors and the maple tree was next to a wide paved path, which allowed me to sit and place my tripod on the path. From that position, I was able to experience and photograph the beautiful curved branches and the rich autumn colors against the diffused overcast sky.     John McAnulty is an award-winning Portland photographer specializing in stock and fine art scenic, portrait and floral photography.
