Photographer: Charles Sleicher, Seattle
Image Title: Giraffe on African Plain
Category: Wildlife

Technical Details: Canon EOS3, 100-400 IS lens, probably around 200mm, Fuji Provia F film pushed one stop, f/8 at 1/640 second
Location: Masai Mara, Kenya
Description: This shot was taken while on a photographic safari to Kenya organized by Joe and Mary Ann McDonald in October 2002. The scene typifies for me the life and landscape of the African plain, where giraffe and herds of wildebeest are common. What makes this image so special is the light - the shadow across the trees and wildebeest in the background, while the giraffe and wildebeest in the foreground are in the sun.

Charles Sleicher began a serious interest in photography when he retired from the University of Washington in 1991. His photography is concentrated principally on natural history - birds, mammals, reptiles, insects, flowers, landscapes, or almost anything that could be regarded as outdoor photography.

His credits include National Geographic, Audubon magazine, Nature's Best magazine, Sunset magazine, Sierra Club Wildlife Calendar, Inner Reflections Calendar, Sanibel-Captiva Nature Calendar, the covers of two books, exhibits at the University of Washington, and other exhibits including the predecessor of this World in Focus exhibit, the Northwest Exhibition of Environmental Photography.
