Description: Bats are still largely a mystery, even to scientists around the world. To love a bat, as many do, you have to get beyond appearances and centuries of cultural myths. This is a Townsend's Big-Eared bat, with its delicate, paper-thin wings that are really webbed hands. Photographed in a studio for the cover of a Seattle Times Sunday magazine story (© Seattle Times).
