Description: For three years, I observed and photographed, in a studio setting, over 260 species of live butterflies. Initially I wanted to bring a new, artistic perspective to the subject. However, when I learned that butterflies are our world's most environmentally sensitive living organisms, and served as an early indicator of environmental stress, my art took on new meaning. May this portrait of the Banded Peacock Swallowtail, and others within my body of work, encourage an appreciation for the insect, and thus contribute to the growing number of reasons why we should tread gently on the environment, a delicately balanced system we share with the likes of the butterfly.

William Castner has been involved with photography as a medium for creative expression for over 20 years and began approaching it as a full-time career in 1999. For the last five years, a number of his prints have been in the Photo Expo that tours North America and Europe, and Fuji Film USA now offers several of his images in their "Master Series Awards" program.

A generalist by inclination, William's subject matter ranges from the butterfly to flowers to images of the American West. Jadei Graphics of Los Angeles distributes his four fine-art butterfly posters internationally. They are also offered on over 150 art websites worldwide and are available in various art catalogues in the U.S., Canada and Europe.

William is represented by Image State of New York and London. He
lives with his wife LaNi in Boulder, Colorado.
